Glencore Technology Expands Global “Women and Girls in Science” Mentorship Programme

Glencore Technology are expanding an International Women and Girls in Science Day initiative and inviting six women and girls from around the world who want to grow a science career to be mentored by a team member from the company.

The Women and Girls in Science Programme is open to Secondary School Students, University Students and Entry-level Professionals.  The 8 month programme is centred on mineral-processing sciences and includes –

  • A mentor and buddy, meeting online with their mentee once a week.
  • A programme of career tips, guidance, leadership skills and other well-chosen soft-skills.
  • A programme of content related to the work the Glencore Technology women do, a helpful fast-track for the selected mentees’ own careers.
  • Networking opportunities with other scientists and allied staff from Glencore Technology.
  • Three tailored projects to deliver experiences the mentees can learn from and cite in their resume.
  • A certificate of completion after the programme.

The programme’s mentors this year include both men and women, collaborating to deliver an in-depth programme.

Glencore Technology CTO, Paul Telford, said, “What we saw last year when we launched this programme was that the learnings went both ways.  While we were busy helping three women, they actually helped us learn about what they experience in their journey.”

“The diversity in this industry is good, but it should be even greater.  Our team of mentors has doubled, and now we have men wanting to collaborate, give and to learn, too.  This day is a very important day for science and for gender equality.  And it’s an important day for us as a team.”

Interested women and girls can apply online, telling the company a little about themselves and why they want the mentorship.  Glencore Technology will select six winners of the programme… from school seniors, university students and entry-level or emerging professionals.

Ms Sarah Domanti, a mentor last year and returning this year, said, “We could see the value we were providing to the mentees, and in return they taught and inspired us, and helped broaden our understanding of the world. I’m excited to meet our new mentees online to discuss our work, our careers and soft-skills. It’s so great to see the programme growing!”

New mentor, Miss Akala Street, said, “I had a woman in aerospace engineering come to my school which helped me choose my pathway into science. Now I can help other women and girls considering their own careers.  And let’s be honest, it’ll also be fun!”

The 8 month programme helps prepare potential and new women and girls in science, and also provides a great networking opportunity to meet more people.

The programme is open from Friday 11th February, with a promotion to unfold to help drive candidacy and selection.  It is open to women and senior high school girls right around the world.  Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English, sound computer knowledge and access to a good internet connection.
