Glencore Technology’s Jameson Cell is now operational at Mogalakwena North Concentrator (MNC), enabling Valterra Platinum to achieve the full potential of their low mass pull strategy.

This approach is being applied in MNC’s processing chain to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen environmental performance. Incorporating Jameson Cells into the concentrator allows Valterra Platinum to produce higher PGM concentrate grades at lower volumes, meaning less material to smelt.

Now fully commissioned and delivering strong performance, the Jameson Cell has enabled measurable improvements. At the MNC, concentrate volumes declined by 14% while concentrate grade increased by 16%, resulting in a 21% reduction in material handling and logistics.

Speaking with Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly  about Mogalakwena, Valterra Platinum CEO Craig Miller said:

"As optimisation continues and the plant's annualised impact is realised, we're also encouraged by the almost one percentage point improvement in the adjusted north concentrator recoveries since the commissioning. While the recovery uplift was not the primary objective of the introduction of the Jameson cells, the team is optimistic that further improvements may follow.”

Diesel savings alone are expected to translate into substantial cost reductions for the operation, with Glencore Technology’s flotation cell projected to reduce 3,800 truckloads of concentrate per annum.

Just four Jameson Cells were required to replace 40 conventional units. This was another advantage that reinforced Glencore Technology as the clear choice to support MNC in achieving its objectives.

"These results once again confirm what we saw through extensive lab and pilot work: the Jameson Cell can scale up accurately while outperforming conventional cells in selectivity and efficiency”, said Ryan Jones, Senior metallurgist from Glencore Technology.

This improvement in efficiency has also initiated discussions regarding the potential installation of additional Jameson Cells across Valterra Platinum’s other concentrators. Craig Miller stated

“We're in the process of refurbishing the south concentrator, and one of the things that we'll look at it in the refurbishment is introducing the Jameson cells at south concentrator as well. That'll be in a couple of years”
