Jameson Cell delivers reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions
Brisbane, Australia
As the world continues towards the net-zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions target, one of the most important challenges facing the mining industry is the increasing importance of meeting global demand for minerals, while continuing to develop sustainable mining practises.
As global minerals demand increases in key commodities the mining industry is looking for solutions that provide strong target mineral recovery with a low carbon footprint.
A recent study undertaken by Ausenco provided a comparative analysis of separation technologies, with a comparison of Jameson Cells and conventional flotation methods. The study was based on a greenfield project with a plant capacity of 14 Mt/y and compared scope 2 and 3 emissions based on a 15-year LOM.
The Jameson Cell is widely considered the most effective froth flotation technology in the world and is proven in base and precious metals globally.
The report by Ausenco showed the Jameson Concentrator technology also provided a lower carbon footprint than conventional flotation methods, recording less Scope 2 and Scope 3 GHG emissions.
The report quantified direct and indirect GHG emissions throughout the life cycle of each equipment type including detailed life cycle assessments including construction, and operation, to determine their respective carbon footprints.
One of the key findings was in the Jameson Cells unique space saving features which has benefits in cost and also in emissions. The estimated total steel required in the Conventional Concentrator is 3.2 times that of the steel required for the Jameson Concentrator. There is also an estimated 55% reduction in concrete required for the Jameson Concentrator compared to the Conventional Concentrator.
Operationally also the Jameson Concentrator was more environmentally efficient, with less power requirements than the Conventional Concentrator.
‘Long considered the mining industry benchmark, the Jameson Cell continues to outperform competitor products. One of our key goals at Glencore Technology is in developing technologies that help the mining industry be more efficient in improving recovery and delivering cost effective solutions that reduce emissions’ said Glenn Stieper Director of Growth & Solutions at Glencore Technology.
Jameson Cell and Jameson Concentrators are sold and supported globally by Glencore Technology.
